About the museum
The Turku Water Works Museum is located by the Halistenkoski rapids in the old main building of the Turku water works, where the purification of surface water from the Aurajoki (Aura River) into drinking water for townspeople began in 1923. The neo-classical main building was completed in 1922, and water purification and analysis continued there until 1954, when the new main building of the water works was completed. Much of the original equipment and furniture remained in the vacated building, which is why the laboratory and the engineer's room survived in exceptionally authentic condition.
The second floor of the building was turned into a water works museum in the 1990s, and the museum opened in August 1998. It is the only museum in Finland that presents the history of water supply and water use. The museum is maintained by Turun Vesihuolto Oy and Aurajokisäätiö.
The exhibition has two parts. In the former chemical dosing hall, an exhibition tells of the development of water works operations in Turku from the late 19th century and of how everyday water use has changed over the last hundred years. On the laboratory side, the laboratory, gas generation room and director's room have been restored to their original appearance. Next to the chemical dosing hall is the tisurikoppi (the on-duty worker's room), furnished as it was in use.

| Good to know | The maximum size of a guided group is 20 people because of the museum's small rooms. A larger group can be divided into two, in which case the visit also includes a walk around Halistenkoski and possibly a visit to the Aura River visitor centre Myllärintalo. Guided tours are available in Finnish, Swedish and English. Allow about one hour for the museum exhibition. Enquiries and bookings: Aurajokisäätiö. |
