About the museum
The University of Turku Zoological Museum maintains and develops one of Finland's two largest natural science collections, in which almost four million specimens are stored. The foundations of the collections were the insect and bird collections acquired by the Turun Suomalainen Yliopistoseura (Turku Finnish University Society) in 1920–1921, which included the extensive insect collections of the Sahlberg family.
The history of research on Turku's fauna goes back to the era of the Turku Academy. Carl Reinhold Sahlberg (1779–1860) is one of the world's most important entomologists, and the Sahlberg collections are among the few specimens from Turku that survived the great fire of 1827. The museum's research focuses on animal groups that are little studied elsewhere in the world, and the museum also holds the biological animal collections of Åbo Akademi.
In the exhibition open to visitors are displayed the most remarkable tropical arthropod species, such as a butterfly considered the most beautiful in the world, and the largest wasps of the rainforest. The museum's earliest collections, from the early 1800s, can be viewed in the history exhibition.
