About the museum
Urkin Piilopirtti is an art museum in Pinsiö in Pirkanmaa, on the border of Ylöjärvi, Nokia and Hämeenkyrö, in a national landscape area. It has operated as a Museum Card museum and as a member of the Finnish Museums Association (Museoliitto) since spring 2021; the museum also trades under the name Art Zoo Tampere. The site also has a hotel, a restaurant that takes reservations, saunas and programme services, and the name is linked to the history of President Urho Kekkonen.
The museum’s speciality is that almost all of the works were commissioned and designed specifically for this place. There are about 250 works, both indoors and outdoors on the 1.2-hectare plot: in the lake, on the jetty, in trees, on footpaths by the shore, on the walls of the houses, and even in the sauna’s steam room. The interior, such as the mirrors, textiles, lamps and tableware, also consists of unique art pieces. The works often incorporate technology, such as textiles that react to heat. Every year a theme is set, under which new works are commissioned; the commissioned works remain permanently in the museum’s collection.
