About the museum
The sculptor Ossi Somma began work in 1967 on the sculpture Turkiskauppiaat (Fur Traders), commissioned by the town of Nokia, at Penttilä school in the village of Siuro, where teaching had ended. A fire destroyed the building with its workspaces and all the works, but the small model of Turkiskauppiaat survived. The sculpture was completed in 1971 and erected at Pirkkalaistori in Nokia.
Somma bought the surviving school building and moved there with his wife Sinikka from Espoo in 1975. He taught sculpture at the Kankaanpää art school and gradually placed his works in the former school yard next to his studio. Over the years the yard took shape as a sculpture park with dozens of sculptures, including larger groupings such as Tuolimetsä and Tuonelan virta.
The former outbuilding of Penttilä school accumulated sculptures and became Ossi Somma’s wax museum. The studio building preserves Somma’s former workspace as well as tools and unfinished paintings of Maria Mattila; the upstairs Minigalleria displays Somma’s small sculptures and drawings from his school years.
