About the museum

The Rieffel casemate, also known as the southern casemate of Oberrœdern, was built in 1930 as one of the first casemates of the Maginot Line. It is one of five fortifications defending the municipal area of Oberrœdern and lies on the main line of defense between the Schoenenbourg fortress work and the Abri de Hatten.

When France mobilized in 1939, the 79th Fortress Infantry Regiment occupied the sector. A crew of 24 men under Lieutenant Rieffel was tasked with defending the casemate. After the quiet period of the “drôle de guerre” (phony war), the German army attacked in June 1940. A first assault was repelled on June 19, and Sergeant Delsart was killed on June 20. The armistice took effect on June 25, 1940.

After 1945 the casemate was abandoned and looted. The association Amis de la Ligne Maginot d’Oberrœdern has been restoring it since 2001 and refitting it to its 1940 condition. It has been open to the public since 2008. Volunteers guide visitors and each year, on August 25, hold a ceremony in memory of the Alsatians who were forcibly conscripted into the German army.
