Temporary location. The museum's historic building, on rue du Musée, has been closed since the end of 2002. The museum offers activities and exhibitions at 10 rue du Chapitre until it reopens in the former sub-prefecture.

About the museum

The museum was founded in 1912–1913 on the initiative of a local learned society, the Altertumsverein. In 1909, thanks to the patron Paul Westercamp, the town had bought two 15th- and 16th-century houses at the foot of the ramparts to house the museum, which opened its doors in 1913. Today it is the municipal museum of Wissembourg and holds the “Musée de France” label.

The collections cover local history, archaeology, arts and folk traditions, middle-class furniture from the 17th to the 19th century and souvenirs of the 1870 war, including weapons and uniforms. In the 1920s a military room was set up in the neighbouring hop hall to present the collection of Auguste Spinner. In 1991 the town acquired a set of images from the Wentzel lithographic printing house of Wissembourg; in 2022 it bought the Wentzel and successors archive, which comprises more than 50,000 lithographs as well as presses, lithographic stones and tools.

At the end of 2002 the museum closed its historic building for reasons of safety for people and collections. In 2018 the collections moved to a storage building near the former synagogue, place des Carmes. The museum is expected to reopen in the former sub-prefecture; in the meantime it offers activities and exhibitions at 10 rue du Chapitre. The museum belongs to the shared conservation service of the Parc naturel régional des Vosges du Nord.
