About the museum
The Frontignan municipal museum occupies the former chapel of the White Penitents, built around 1642 near the church of Saint-Paul. Its portal is protected as a historic monument. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
Its collections tell the story of the town and its region, from prehistory to the present day. They include objects from underwater archaeology, notably remains of 19th-century shipwrecks and of Napoleonic-era wrecks found off the Aresquiers, as well as weapons from that period.
Other areas evoke the heritage of Frontignan muscat wine (demijohns, cooperage tools, advertisements), the Languedoc water jousts, documented on the Étang d'Ingril as early as 1627, and the industrial history of the town, with salt extraction and sulphur processing in the Pielles district. A temporary exhibition is presented each year on the upper floor.
