About the museum
The Loupian site is a Gallo-Roman agricultural estate that was occupied for six centuries, from the 1st century BCE to the 6th century CE. In the 1st and 2nd centuries the estate was devoted almost exclusively to wine production.
In Late Antiquity, during the 5th and 6th centuries, the last owners used their luxurious residence as a summer retreat in the middle of their lands. Major works were carried out there, including polychrome mosaic floors, and an early Christian church was built at the beginning of the 5th century. The mosaics are incomplete and were restored with modern black, grey and white tesserae, so that the restored sections can be clearly distinguished from the original pavement. The site has been listed as a Monument historique since 1970.
The museum is the culmination of more than forty years of research and archaeological work. It offers one of the rare French examples of preserving and presenting Roman mosaics in situ, under a 1,000 m² protective building. Two exhibition rooms present the history and workings of the villa, its models and objects, as well as rare basketry and wooden objects found in ancient wells of neighboring villas at Poussan and Montbazin.
The museum belongs to the heritage network of Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée, together with the Jardin Antique Méditerranéen and the Musée de l'Étang de Thau. It also hosts lectures, evening events and, in summer, events across more than two hectares, such as the Augustales, Roman days.
