About the museum

La Bâtie d’Urfé is an emblematic estate in the Forez, remodeled in the Renaissance on the initiative of Claude d’Urfé (1501–1558), French ambassador to Italy under Francis I and Henry II. It combines the building techniques of the Forez with Franco-Italian Renaissance art, with both French and Italian artists involved.

The château houses a rare decorative ensemble: an artificial grotto commissioned in the late 1540s, covered in decoration of shells, colored sand, pebbles and local stones, and a chapel built between 1548 and 1558. The chapel combines painting, marquetry, cabinetmaking, enamelled earthenware, glasswork and stucco. These decorations reflect Claude d’Urfé’s worldview, shaped by religion and classical literature. The gardens have been partly reconstructed in their 16th-century state.

The site also tells the story of the d’Urfé family. The estate belongs to the association “La Diana” and has been managed by the Loire Department since 2007. It is listed as a historic monument and carries the “Musée de France” label as well as the “Maison des Illustres” label.
