About the museum

The Feurs municipal museum was founded in 1929 and opened in 1930 in four rooms of the former convent of the Minimes, which the town had owned since 1905. From 1931, an association of friends of the museum managed it. In 1979, the collections moved into the Château d'Assier, a late 18th-century mansion bought by the commune in 1977.

The museum received the “Musée de France” label in 2002. It was called Musée d'archéologie de Feurs from 2005, and has been called Musée de Feurs since 2020. Its collections cover archaeology, fine arts, ethnography, numismatics and natural sciences. Excavations at the Forum Segusiavorum, the former Gallo-Roman capital of the Segusiavi, enrich the archaeological holdings.

Renovation and accessibility works, including the installation of a lift, began in 2019. The third floor was redesigned in 2021 around the landscape painter Charles Beauverie, born in Lyon and long resident in Poncins. A new permanent exhibition on the history of Feurs opened on the second floor in 2024.
