About the museum

The Conservatoire d'anatomie was founded in 1795, at the same time as the Montpellier school of health. It grew thanks to its students: from 1798, no student could sit the final examinations without having deposited a natural or artificial anatomical specimen. Famous doctors and surgeons also donated pieces taken from cases observed in the hospital.

The museum opened in 1852 to present the collections assembled since 1795. It moved into a gallery built in 1851 by the architect Pierre-Charles Abric, facing the Jardin des plantes, where it still stands. Colonnaded decoration and allegorical paintings by Jean-Pierre Montseret accompany a sequence of period display cases.

The collections number more than 13,000 objects: dissection specimens, moulages in wax, plaster or papier-mâché (including the series by the Florentine Felice Fontana), surgical instruments and orthopaedic equipment, plus collections of comparative anatomy, zoology and archaeology. They have been listed as a historic monument since 2004.
