About the museum

The museum originated from a gift by Xavier Atger (1758–1833), an official and collector, who entrusted his drawings and prints to the Montpellier faculty of medicine between 1813 and 1832. He wanted to give medical students a taste for the arts and the opportunity to practise anatomical drawing, which was then taught as part of their training. It is the oldest museum in Montpellier.

It occupies a wing of a former 14th-century college, on the second floor of the faculty's historic buildings, rue de l'École-de-Médecine. The collection comprises about 1,000 drawings and 5,000 prints from the Flemish, Italian, Dutch, German and French schools, with works by Fragonard, Natoire, Tiepolo, Jordaens and Rubens. In 2017, a donation of 81 drawings by the Montpellier-based artist Colette Richarme added contemporary works.
