About the museum

The museum was founded in 1932 by the Lou Parage association. Its name comes from the Occitan word “fougau”, meaning hearth. It is housed in the Hôtel de Varennes, an 18th-century mansion on the Place Pétrarque in Montpellier. Count and Countess of Rodez-Bénavent were its main patrons and gave several remarkable pieces, including a 17th-century polychrome wooden statue of the Virgin and Child.

It is a museum of everyday life, preserving furniture, folk costumes, dolls, old maps and paintings of historic Montpellier. The main room recreates a traditional 20th-century family interior around a large fireplace that came from the Château de Brissac. A section called “Enfanca” displays objects and clothing for children from the first half of the 20th century.
