About the museum

The Écomusée d'Alsace grew out of a movement to save rural heritage. In 1971, a group of history and archaeology students led by Marc Grodwohl restored and dismantled houses threatened with demolition in Gommersdorf. The association Maisons paysannes d'Alsace was founded in 1973. Since the buildings could not be kept on their original sites, it decided to take them down and rebuild them faithfully, following the model of ecomuseums.

The town of Ungersheim, between Mulhouse and Colmar, provided a piece of wasteland. The first house, the house from Kœtzingue, was rebuilt there in 1980 with support from the Haut-Rhin département. Nineteen more buildings followed by 1984. The museum opened to the public on June 1, 1984, and drew about 75,000 visitors in its first year.

Today the open-air museum presents about 80 buildings, from half-timbered houses and workshops to farms, with everyday objects, tools and craftspeople's demonstrations. It holds the “Musée de France” label and is run by an association of about 300 volunteers.
