About the museum
The museum occupies the former residence of the canons of Murbach in Guebwiller, the former capital of the Principality of Murbach. It traces the history of the town and the Florival valley across five levels, served by a lift.
The basement is devoted to geology, going back about 400 million years, with a large collection of minerals from the Vosges massif and fragments of stone from local architecture. The first floor presents the religious and secular art of the former Murbach abbey principality, and the three upper floors the traditional trades and the development of the town. The museum also holds archaeological collections.
The museum's special feature is its collection of ceramics by Théodore Deck, born in Guebwiller, who became director of the Sèvres national manufactory. He rediscovered a turquoise-blue formula derived from Ottoman ceramics, known as “bleu de Deck”. One entire floor displays about 500 pieces, with shapes and decorations inspired by Asian and aquatic flora and fauna, including a reconstruction of a bathroom and a faience veranda. It is the largest public collection of faience from the Deck brothers' manufactory.
