About the museum
The foundation was established in 1994 from the lives and wishes of two modern painters, Hans Hartung (1904–1989) and Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987). In the 1960s the couple bought a two-hectare olive grove on the heights of Antibes, where they had a villa and studios built. Construction was formally handed over on December 19, 1973; both artists lived and worked there until the end of their lives.
The site, made up of the modernist villa and a grove of centuries-old olive trees, is today the seat of the foundation. This public-interest body preserves, studies and promotes the work of the two artists, in Antibes and abroad. It holds an exceptional collection of works and archives.
The foundation is also a center for research in art history: it publishes the catalogues raisonnés of both artists, organizes seminars and colloquia, and provides expertise and authentication of works. It presents temporary exhibitions in the spaces of the former house.
