About the museum

The Musée Peynet et du Dessin humoristique is located in the old town of Antibes, on Place Nationale, near the harbor. Raymond Peynet, a draftsman born in Paris in 1908, settled in Antibes in 1976. In 1988, Senator and mayor Pierre Merli suggested he create a museum. The artist donated nearly 300 works, which form the permanent collection. Two bronze lovers, a tribute to his famous couple, stand at the entrance.

Peynet is known for “Les Amoureux”, a small couple he began drawing in 1943, which spread through the press and then onto many other media: porcelain, silk, jewelry, dolls and lithographs. Two museums are dedicated to him, one in Japan and one in France.

In 1995, with Peynet’s agreement, the museum opened to press and humor cartoonists. It has carried its current name since 1999. It stages exhibitions devoted to an individual artist or theme, for example from Daumier to Plantu on justice, and pursues an acquisitions policy. The collection now comprises more than 800 drawings and documents, from the 19th century to the present day.
