About the museum
Fort de Liouville, also known as Fort Stengel, was built between 1876 and 1880 on a slope facing west, near Commercy, as part of the Séré de Rivières system. It overlooked the Meuse valley and the railway line to Lérouville, facing Lorraine, which was then occupied. Its plan is roughly rectangular, and its barracks are distinguished by gothic-style arched windows.
From 1892 the work received a protected magazine and counterscarps, then a 155 mm turret, machine-gun turrets and a 75 mm turret. During the First World War (1914–1918) it suffered heavy bombardment, especially in September and October 1914, but it was never taken.
After the war the fort fell into disrepair. Founded in 1988, the Association pour la Sauvegarde du Fort de Liouville (ASFL) has been restoring it for more than thirty-five years and now organizes the guided tours.
