About the museum

Fort Suchet, also called Fort du Barbonnet, was built between 1883 and 1886 on the summit of Mont Barbonnet, at 847 metres above sea level. This fort of the Séré de Rivières type was meant to block the Sospel pass and protect the road from Turin to Nice via the Col de Tende, while also covering the Col de Braus. Two armoured Mougin turrets, each armed with two 155 mm guns, were installed as early as 1886–1887. Between 1891 and 1917 the works were strengthened with concrete, a new powder magazine, batteries and shelters.

Between 1931 and 1935 the site was converted into an artillery work of the Maginot Line. Only the entrance block and the southern casemate were built out of the four planned blocks. In June 1940 the works fired on Italian troops, and its crew left on July 3, 1940. After the war the fort was rearmed, but it had lost its defensive value by 1963.

Today enthusiasts maintain the site and present the history of the fort and of artillery. It has one of the few Mougin turrets in France still in working order. The visit begins with a video presentation, then continues across the top of the works, through the galleries, the turret, the barracks and the museum rooms, including a space devoted to the Armée des Alpes.
