About the museum
The Agaisen fortress work was built between 1930 and 1937 on Mont Agaisen, near Sospel. It is one of the large artillery fortress works of the Maginot Line in the Alps and was designed for defence. Its underground installations could house about 400 soldiers, who took part in the fighting of June 1940 and helped stop the advance of the Italian army in the Bévéra valley.
The work was listed as a historic monument on August 25, 2016. A volunteer association has maintained and run it since 1992. A turret still in working order can fire through 360 degrees.
Guides lead visitors through the underground galleries, to the power station, to the living quarters (kitchens, bedrooms, infirmary) and to the artillery turret. A reading table and several information panels complete the on-site visit.
