About the museum
The Saint-Roch fort is a large artillery fort of the Maginot Line in the Alpes-Maritimes. It lies southwest of Sospel, on the right bank of the Bévéra, at an altitude of about 400 meters, and one of its blocks borders the road to the Col de Braus. It was designed to close the Sospel pass, complementing the Agaisen fort.
Work took place in the 1930s (from 1932 to 1936 according to the tourist office). Its main armament was a 75 mm gun, supplemented by mortars and machine guns. The support installations are underground, and the fort had three diesel generators. It took no part in the fighting of June 1940.
Today the fort is visited in season with an audio guide, along galleries cut into the rock and reinforced concrete structures, where staged scenes show the everyday life of the soldiers. A permanent exhibition presents the history and heritage of the site.
