About the museum
The Géoscope is an open-air exhibition devoted to the geological history of Lozère over more than 500 million years. It is located at the Aire de la Lozère rest area along the A75 motorway, at exit 32 near Albaret-Sainte-Marie, in the commune of Les Monts-Verts.
Forty-five rock blocks of several tonnes each, each accompanied by an explanatory panel, are arranged in a circle in a former quarry. They present the rocks of each part of the département: the basalt of the Aubrac, the granite of the Margeride, the limestone of the Causses and the mica schist of the Cévennes. A geological map, panels on the history of the Earth and rock sections complete the site.
