About the museum
The museum occupies the former episcopal palace of Saint-Flour, built in the 17th century by Bishop Charles de Noailles at the foot of the Saint-Pierre cathedral. Listed as a historic monument, the building is shared between the town hall and the museum. The museum was founded in 1967 and its first room opened in 1968.
The collections cover regional archaeology and religious statuary from the 12th to the 19th century, including the statue of Saint Pierre de Bredons, as well as the cathedral treasure. The bishop’s private chapel and the chapter house are part of the route. Furnished rooms also present the ethnology of the Haute-Auvergne: furniture, costumes, musical instruments and folk art.
The museum holds the “Musée de France” label. It is close to the Musée d’art et d’histoire Alfred-Douët, with which it offers a joint ticket.
