About the museum

La Maison du Distillateur is a museum space created by the Distillerie Meyer, a family-owned, independent company in the Val de Villé at the foot of the Alsatian Vosges. Brothers Lionel and Arnaud Meyer, who now run the distillery, wanted to pass on a family tradition and to make known the art of distilling fruit brandies and the birth of Alsatian whisky.

The route traces the history of the bouilleurs de cru, farm distillers who have been active in this part of Alsace for two centuries, and the role of the orchards of the Val de Villé, where the art of distilling is often passed down from father to son. It also pays tribute to Alsatian cuisine and the roots of the distillery.

The visit unfolds across six areas: a historical area; an imaginative area (a screening room seating about fifty, with an eight-minute documentary); an area on the transformation of fruit into brandy; a science area with several stills; a “from cask to glass” area on the production of Meyer’s Alsatian whisky; and, to finish, a tasting in the shop. The elf Wurzel, a figure from the Val de Villé, accompanies visitors throughout the route.
