About the museum
La Folie Marco is a large country house built between 1760 and 1763 for Louis-Félix Marco, bailiff of Barr, outside the town gates in the middle of the vineyards. The bailiff lived there with his wife and son until his death in 1772. Several middle-class families then succeeded one another in the house, which served as both main residence and holiday home and was altered several times.
In 1922, the brothers Henri and Gustave Schwartz bought the house and gathered antique furniture, works of art, paintings, tableware and books there. On their deaths, they bequeathed the house and their collections to the town of Barr so that it could become a museum, which opened in the 1960s. The town now runs it as a museum of decorative arts.
The visit follows chronological order. The oldest furniture, chests and large Alsatian wardrobes of the 17th century open the route. The 18th-century rooms retain their original wall decoration, with stucco, marquetry furniture, clocks and faience tableware. The 19th century, the richest period of the collections, is illustrated by Empire and Restoration furniture and objects. In some rooms, the books and everyday objects of the Schwartz brothers evoke life in the 1940s and 1950s.
