About the museum
The Maison du Pain d’Alsace is in Sélestat, a town with the Ville d’art et d’histoire label, in the former house of the bakers’ guild, a building dating from 1522. It is run by an association of around 80 members, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026 and relies on volunteers, employees and apprentices.
Renovated in 2018, the museum traces the whole history of bread, from grain to loaf: agriculture, milling, the traditional know-how of bakers and the work of today’s craftspeople. It also devotes areas to Alsatian specialities such as kougelhopf, bretzel, lammele and bredele, as well as to the history of the bakers’ guild (the Zunft). Its objects come from the memories and documents of the association’s members.
The site combines the museum with a bakery (fournil) that produces breads, pastries and Alsatian specialities, a tea room with a terrace, and a shop selling Alsatian products. Throughout the year the association organises guided tours, workshops (bread, decorated biscuits) and events; the site welcomes around 13,000 visitors a year on average.
