About the museum
The museum occupies the former Catholic presbytery of Reichshoffen. This bailiff’s house, built in 1759, is roughly contemporary with the neighboring church and served as a presbytery until 1972. Archaeological finds in the 1970s and 1980s led to its renovation, and the museum opened its doors in 1993.
The route, spread over ten rooms and three levels, traces the history of the town and its surroundings, from prehistory to the industrial age. The basement covers the period from the Paleolithic to the Bronze Age, Gallo-Roman crafts, pottery, bone and metalworking, coins, funerary rites, religion and daily life.
The first floor is devoted to the Middle Ages and the period up to the Revolution, with the first blast furnaces and forges. The second floor presents the iron industry of the 19th and 20th centuries, notably products from the de Dietrich works. The de Dietrich family acquired the lordship of Reichshoffen in 1761 and left a lasting mark on the town’s history. A temporary exhibition is presented each season on the third floor.
