About the museum
The Niederbronn-les-Bains area has long attracted archaeologists and gave rise to a local research tradition. The Maison de l'Archéologie des Vosges du Nord, which holds the “Musée de France” label, brings together objects that come mainly from excavations in northern Alsace.
The prehistoric section covers the Early Palaeolithic through to the Final Bronze Age and displays more than a hundred pieces: flint, ornaments, tools and a reconstruction of a settlement. The Gallo-Roman collections, which made the museum's reputation, come largely from the spa town and from the Château de la Wasenbourg, a former Roman lookout post.
The museum has also become an important centre for medieval archaeology, thanks to volunteers who are restoring the Schoeneck castle. It also presents the results of excavations at the Wasenbourg and Hohenfels castles. A collection of stoves recalls the industrial history of the Dietrich family, ironmasters.
The Roman baths, about 500 m from the museum, can be visited freely every day with the free Via Janus app, which offers an entertaining guided tour and an augmented-reality reconstruction.
