About the museum
Vultures disappeared from the region in the 1940s. In 1981 the first birds were released at the foot of the cliffs of the Jonte gorges, as part of a reintroduction programme presented as a world first.
Since then, all four European vulture species can again be seen in the region: the griffon vulture, the cinereous vulture, the Egyptian vulture and, since 2012, the bearded vulture.
The Maison des vautours is located on the D996 departmental road between Le Rozier and Meyrueis. Its fully renovated museum spreads over three levels built against the rock and explains the appearance, physiology and disappearance of vultures, as well as their return. A terrace fitted with telescopes allows visitors to watch the birds in the wild, and a screening room shows images filmed by cameras placed in the cliffs.
