About the museum
The La Graufesenque site is in Millau, near the confluence of the Tarn and the Dourbie. In Roman times, large quantities of sigillata ceramics were made here: red tableware distributed throughout the Roman Empire. The site was occupied from the Gallic period until around the 2nd century and is reported to have employed close to 600 potters.
Excavations began in the 19th century and continued throughout the 20th, notably with the major campaigns of 1901 to 1906, then work in the 1950s and from 1975 onward. Part of the remains is listed (inscrit), and another part is classified as a historic monument (classé).
The site is managed together with the Musée de Millau et des Grands Causses (MuMiG), which keeps and displays some of the finds. Visitors can see remains of sanctuaries, kilns, workshops and warehouses, as well as a drainage network.
