About the museum
The Maison du Fromage in Gunsbach is a discovery site devoted to the traditions of the marcaires of the Munster Valley, the herders who work the high pastures of the Vosges and make Munster cheese. The route blends local culture and gastronomy.
The visit begins with a film presenting the Munster Valley and the life of the marcaires in the high pastures through the seasons. It then passes through a barn filled with objects, tools and displays that evoke their way of life, with a visit to the cowshed and a view of the cheese dairy through glass walls.
The route ends in the demonstration area, a reconstructed marcairie. A guide presents the making of Munster there as a fictional demonstration, explained in several languages. The visit concludes with a tasting of traditional cheeses: Siaskaas, Munster and Barikaas.
On site, a shop sells local produce and a restaurant serves regional cuisine. The site is also a stop for cyclists and hosts events such as the summer “mardis folkloriques”.
