About the museum
The Musée de la Schlitte opened in 1973 in Muhlbach-sur-Munster, in the Munster valley, considered the cradle of schlittage (timber sledging). It honors the men who worked in the forests long before machines arrived, relying on sheer muscle power.
The trade of schlitteur was practiced for more than 300 years in the Vosges. It involved bringing timber down from the mountain forests on the schlitte, a large wooden sledge. The museum presents this trade and its history, as well as other traditional woodworking crafts.
The collections include many old tools: those of the cooper, clog maker, joiner, woodturner, toolmaker and other craftsmen. Visits are led by volunteer guides who tell the stories of past generations and their know-how.
