About the museum

The Maison du patrimoine occupies a group of remarkable buildings on the quai du Port, which once housed the Navy bakery and shops linked to port activity. The site stands where the old ferry crossing linked the two banks of the Charente until the bridge was built in 1879.

In 1973, the discovery of the remains of an 11th-century Romanesque chapel within the building itself led to the project. The Foyer rural (village community center) of Saint-Savinien then founded, in 1978, the association Les Amis de Saint-Savinien et sa région, to preserve the urban and historical heritage of the town. Today the association runs the museum, where members welcome visitors.

The rural museum displays old tools, a collection of prehistoric stones and flints, objects from the Gallo-Roman period and the memory of former trades of inland navigation, quarrying and shipbuilding, with photographs, models, plans and documents. It also exhibits a cannonball from the Hermione, La Fayette's frigate. It is one of the sites that promote the middle valley of the Charente in Saintonge.
