About the museum

The Musée Dupuy-Mestreau occupies the Hôtel de Monconseil in Saintes, built in 1738 for the marquis Antoine Guinot de Monconseil. The building housed the prefecture of Charente-Inférieure from 1790 to 1810 before becoming a museum in 1920.

The museum was founded on the initiative of the collector Abel Mestreau (1855–1939), who gathered many objects bearing witness to the identity of Saintonge. It has kept the presentation and atmosphere of an early 20th-century collector’s museum and has carried the “Musée de France” label since 2003.

The collections include wrought-iron signs, faience, prints, paintings, jewellery, costumes, embroidered headdresses and weapons, as well as a reconstruction of a peasant interior.
