About the museum

The museum is housed in a Charentais house built in 1860 by Alexandre Vinet. His daughter Célina was born there in 1879 and lived there all her life. Widowed and without children, she left her possessions to the town in exchange for daily assistance, under an agreement with the mayor of the time, René Boucher, who was behind the museum. She died in 1968 and the museum opened in 1972.

The first rooms show Célina's flat, with its 1900 furniture still in place: a kitchen without running water, a large fireplace, linen and everyday objects, accompanied by sentences in Saintongeais dialect with translations. Other rooms display a fine collection of Saintonge headdresses and lace, the costume of the Saintonge bard, and the play La Mérine à Nastasie, written around 1900 by Dr Athanase Jean, born in Saint-Césaire.

The ground floor is devoted to the bujoliers, potters who made washing containers, the bujours, for about 200 years before stopping their activity at the beginning of the 20th century; the village takes its name from them. The rooms on the first floor have been reorganised with modernised museography, and the Charentais dialect is showcased there. A teaching room also presents the geology of the valley, with layers from the Upper Cretaceous. The museum is run by the commune.
