About the museum

The pink house with green shutters, in Swiss chalet style, was built in 1871 by a carpenter, like the other houses in this part of Boulevard Karl-Marx. Claude Monet and his family moved in in 1874, after first living in a house on the corner of Rue Pierre Guienne. For four years, the painter made use of the setting between town and countryside, the nearby station and emerging industry to create many paintings, now scattered around the world.

After the Monets left in 1878, the owner extended the house, and later owners fitted it out as they wished; the garden gradually lost its original area. The City of Argenteuil bought back the house in 2003 and redid the exteriors and garden from 2010. Since 2018 it has carried out a comprehensive renovation project, and the site opened to the public in September 2022.

The visit is self-guided, set in 19th-century decor, and works like a treasure hunt: visitors open drawers, cupboards and shutters to discover digital content that brings Monet's paintings to life. The route runs from the entrance and winter garden to rooms on the town and countryside, then to the Seine with a reconstruction of the studio boat, and finally to the garden replanted after the paintings.
