About the museum
The museum occupies the birthplace of Dominique-Jean Larrey, born in Beaudéan in 1766. Chief surgeon of Napoleon's armies, he devised the “flying ambulances” and treated the wounded of all sides, making him a forerunner of emergency and humanitarian medicine.
The project began in 1991, when the commune of Beaudéan considered the future of the house. The Rotary Club of Bagnères-de-Bigorre lent its support, and the association Les Amis du Baron Larrey, founded in 1992, prepared the collection together with the Musée du Service de santé du Val-de-Grâce. The commune took charge of the works and the fitting out of the building.
The museum opened its doors in December 2000, and its official inauguration took place on October 19, 2001. It received the “Maison des Illustres” label in 2014. The route combines panels, an audiovisual show with sound, video and light, touch screens and games, with a virtual visit of the village in Larrey's time and a presentation of the history of the lordship of Beaudéan.
