About the museum
The Musée du Marbre is housed in the former thermal baths of Salut, at the end of the Salut valley in Bagnères-de-Bigorre. The building, which local tourism describes as a true “marble palace,” retains its marble floors, bathtubs, thermal gallery, steps and refreshment pavilion (buvette). It provides a natural setting for a collection devoted to the stone, from raw rock quarried from the mountain to polished marble.
The museum grew out of the passion of a collector, Jacques Dubarry de Lassale. He assembled a collection of European marbles, estimated at 320 origins, around a hundred of which come from the Pyrenean quarries, from the Spanish Basque Country to Languedoc. According to the museum's information sheet, the holdings comprise 427 samples. Visitors can also see a renovated historic gallery of marble cabins and bathtubs, as well as a Roman votive altar in white marble dedicated to the nymphs of the city's thermal waters.
The site's natural history museum, which carries the “Musée de France” label, presents a giant model of the Haute-Bigorre and a space devoted to bats. In July and August, an infrared camera allows visitors to observe the colonies living in the attic of the building.
