About the museum
The museum is linked to the philosopher Alain (Émile Chartier), who was born in Mortagne-au-Perche. In 1976, the town of Mortagne, its mayor at the time and the founder of the Association des Amis du Musée Alain et de Mortagne received a collection of furniture, books and documents that had belonged to Alain. These items had been given by the town of Le Vésinet, where the philosopher died in 1951.
The museum is housed in the Hôtel de Puisaye, rue des 15-Fusillés. The permanent exhibition follows Alain’s biography. Display cases present documents from the Alain collection: correspondence, Propos, photographs, paintings and essays. The philosopher’s study has been reconstructed, modelled on the one in his house in Le Vésinet.
The plaster model used to cast the bronze statue in the garden of the Maison des comtes du Perche is kept in a room of the museum. The association Amis d’Alain et de Mortagne runs the site with the help of many volunteers.
