About the museum
The Musée percheron is the town museum of Mortagne-au-Perche, in the Orne department. Its collection brings together ethnographic objects, religious art, some fine arts pieces and archaeological elements. It also includes medals by Jules Chaplain, a medallist from the town, as well as testimony of local life.
The museum has been closed for more than ten years because the building that houses it is not suited to welcoming the public. A 2021 study proposed bringing the town’s collections together in a single location, the Hôtel de Puisaye, in the center of Mortagne.
In February 2025 the Ministry of Culture approved the scientific and cultural project for a future museum of art and history. The project is not only about reopening the Musée percheron: it covers the history and identity of Mortagne-au-Perche and its links with the surrounding countryside.
