About the museum
The museum project was launched in 1998 by the Communauté de communes du Haut-Perche, now the Communauté de communes des Hauts du Perche, together with the association Perche-Canada and with support from the French and Canadian governments. The museum opened in October 2006 and is part of the Muséales de Tourouvre site, which houses two museums.
The route tells the story of French emigration to New France in the 17th century: craftsmen, woodcutters, farmers, clergy, soldiers, sailors and “filles du roi.” Tourouvre was the parish that sent the most settlers, among them the apothecary Robert Giffard and the Juchereau brothers.
The exhibition “Nouvelle-France, nouvelle vie” unfolds across five rooms: the departure from France, the Atlantic crossing, alliances and encounters with Indigenous peoples, life in the colony, and finally Franco-America. Virtual characters welcome visitors in the first room.
