About the museum
The museum occupies the keep of Martres-Tolosane in the Comminges region. In the Gallo-Roman period, a huge villa stood on the banks of the Garonne at a place called Chiragan. Successive excavations of the site have yielded exceptional pieces, mainly busts and marble sculptures. Most of the originals are now kept at the Musée Saint-Raymond in Toulouse.
The museum in Martres-Tolosane displays replicas of these works, as well as a few originals. Visitors can see, for example, copies of Myron’s Athena and Marsyas and Praxiteles’ Aphrodite of Knidos (Venus of Cnidus), and busts of Roman figures such as Julius Caesar, Augustus, Trajan, Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus. Fragments of marble and mosaic complete the display.
The medieval atmosphere of the keep gives the visit a special setting. The old faience pieces of Martres-Tolosane, which belong to the same collection, are presented separately at the interpretation centre for the heritage of Martres (centre d’interprétation du patrimoine martrais).
