About the museum
The museum is housed in the Porte du Croux, a medieval defensive tower dating from the end of the 14th century, in Nevers. In 1847 Baron Denis de Vertpré bought the tower. On his death he gave it to the town on condition that it be restored and that a museum of antiquities from the Nièvre be set up there.
The collections bring together Greek, Roman and medieval antiquities as well as objects of religious art. On display are ancient Greek and Roman marble works and Romanesque sculptures, including capitals from the former church of Saint-Sauveur. In the Salle des Gardes a large Gallo-Roman mosaic is displayed together with pre-Roman and Roman capitals.
The museum has no website of its own. The city of Nevers presents it on its cultural portal and announces openings there, including summer Sundays at 14:00 and guided tours of the Porte du Croux. It is open mainly during the warm season and during the European Heritage Days, and otherwise by appointment.
