About the museum

The museum was founded in 1862 by Vernon's town council following a donation by François de Brécourt: more than 2,000 stuffed birds and beetles, with their scientific documentation. In 1966 it took the name of Alphonse-Georges Poulain, an archaeologist who had been its curator from 1922 to 1966.

In 1983 the collections left the town hall for a 15th-century mansion, the former home of the Le Moine de Belle-Isle family. The neighbouring building, known as the Benac, is partly listed as a historic monument. Since 2024, by ministerial decree of June 19, the museum has borne the name of Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, Claude Monet's stepdaughter, who worked at Giverny, close to Vernon.

The collections reflect the history of the town: Impressionist landscapes of the Seine valley and of the Giverny artists' colony, with works by Claude Monet, Theodore Earl Butler and Mary Fairchild MacMonnies, two landscapes by Pierre Bonnard, who stayed in Vernonnet, and a significant holding of works by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen. An animal-art section brings together sculptures by Rembrandt Bugatti and François Pompon, with works on deposit from the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay.
