About the museum
The museum is housed in a former 18th-century bourgeois townhouse in the town centre of Les Andelys, behind the town hall. According to secondary sources, it opened in 1971, when the commune accepted a bequest from a former chief physician of the Saint-Jacques hospital. Before that, the archaeological collection had been looked after by the local painter and historian Léon Coutil.
It bears the name of Nicolas Poussin, the great 17th-century French painter from the region. It displays a painting by the artist, “Coriolan supplié par sa famille”, which recalls his links with Les Andelys.
The route traces the history of the town from prehistory to the industrial activities of the 20th century. Each room deals with a theme: religious heritage, with statues, liturgical vestments and reliquaries; French painting of the 16th and 17th centuries; the collections of the Duke of Penthièvre, founder of the Saint-Jacques hospital; glass objects by the Holophane company of Les Andelys; paintings of the École de Rouen; and an archaeology room.
In summer the museum also shows installations by contemporary artists in its garden, and each year it presents a temporary exhibition drawn from its storerooms.
