About the museum
The Cointreau story begins in 1849, when Adolphe Cointreau, a confectioner in Angers, diversified the family business by launching liqueurs, starting with guignolet, a local specialty. In 1856 he went into partnership with his brother Édouard-Jean, and together they set up the distillery on rue Molière, on the banks of the Maine, to make exporting easier.
Édouard Cointreau, son of Édouard-Jean, joined the company in 1875. In 1885 he developed the orange liqueur that made the house famous, and registered the trademark and the square bottle with the commercial court in Angers. From 1898 onward, Cointreau launched a major advertising campaign built around the character of Pierrot.
The Carré Cointreau now welcomes visitors into the heart of the distillery in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou, described as the only site in the world that produces this orange liqueur. Its spaces have recently been redesigned. Visitors discover the house's know-how, then enjoy a tailor-made cocktail at the bar; a shop offers products from the Rémy Cointreau group.
