About the museum
The museum is housed in the Logis Barrault, a 15th-century mansion built for Olivier Barrault, treasurer of Brittany and mayor of Angers. The building has been listed as a historic monument since 1902. A 17th-century seminary and 19th-century extensions complete the ensemble.
In 1887 the Galerie Beaurepaire was built to display the sculptures of David d'Angers and his pupils. After five years of work, the museum reopened in 2004 with a completely redesigned display covering about 3,000 m².
The route is organised in two circuits: one devoted to fine arts, from the 17th century to contemporary art, the other to the history of Angers, from Gallo-Roman antiquity onward. The museum shows French and European painters, 20th-century artists from Angers and a room dedicated to François Morellet. On the garden terrace stands a sculpture by Niki de Saint Phalle.
