About the museum

The gallery occupies the remains of the Toussaint abbey, founded in the 13th century by Augustinian canons on the site of an older chapel. After the Revolution the buildings were confiscated and used as an army depot, then gradually fell into ruin. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1902.

In 1980 the City of Angers decided to install there the work of the sculptor David d’Angers (1788–1856), who was born in the city. The architect Pierre Prunet led the restoration: he combined local and contemporary materials and replaced the collapsed vault with a large glass roof.

The gallery opened in May 1984 and was inaugurated by President François Mitterrand. It displays the original plasters of the artist’s major commissions, such as the pediment of the Panthéon or monuments to famous figures, as well as portraits of his contemporaries.

The collection also includes around 4,000 drawings, shown on a rotating basis because of their fragility, and around 550 bronze medallions, of which a selection is on display.
