About the museum
The museum is housed in the Hôtel de Pincé, a Renaissance mansion built in the late 1520s and during the 1530s. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1875, and the museum opened its doors in 1889.
The collections come largely from bequests. The first masterpiece is the collection of Lancelot-Théodore Turpin de Crissé, bequeathed to the city in 1859. Other gifts and purchases have added to it over time.
The holdings bring together objects from the ancient Mediterranean (Egypt, Greece, Etruria, Rome), pre-Columbian art from Central America and the Andes, and works from China and Japan: ceramics, bronzes, lacquerware and Japanese theatre masks. Japanese prints are shown on rotation in the graphic arts cabinet.
The museum closed in 2005 for safety and accessibility reasons and reopened in February 2020 after renovation. The ground floor hosts an annual temporary exhibition, the graphic arts cabinet and a digital space on the history of the building; the permanent collections are on the 2nd floor.
