About the museum

The museum opened in 1888. Its building, designed by the Toulon architect Stanislas Gaudensi Allar, is known for its monumental sculpted and enamelled façade and its U-shaped plan. It also houses the city's art library. After extensive renovation, it reopened in 2021 and holds the “Musée de France” label.

On the ground floor, the route through ancient and modern art is centred on landscape, with 19th-century painters from Marseille and Toulon such as Loubon, Courdouan and Nardi, as well as seascapes and works on the Orient and Mediterranean travel. The first floor presents contemporary art, with more than 1,000 works: Nouveau Réalisme (Arman, César, Niki de Saint Phalle), Minimalism (Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt) and Supports/Surfaces (Daniel Dezeuze, Claude Viallat).

A cabinet of curiosities with around a hundred ethnographic and archaeological objects occupies the historic library. A 230 m² space hosts major temporary exhibitions, and a prints and drawings cabinet shows fragile works such as photographs and drawings in rotation.
